skibigsky's Diaryland Diary

Another attempt at school

Still alive, although I haven’t quite kicked this damn bug. I’m going to see my MD on Wednesday (hopefully I won’t still be sick by then, but you never know…). Hopefully when the weather clears up (we are supposed to get a big storm, but so far, nothing – eh, I take that back – grapple….), I’ll be ready to ski again. This being sick thing is starting to depress me.

And since I’m depressed, and basically bed-ridden (well…. House-bound, which strikes me as the same thing), and I’ve been doing a lot of work (business stuff), I’ve been feeling a bit adrift. Like I’ve got no purpose (yeah, the business stuff is purpose – a big one – but I can’t do it all the time), nothing to be proud of. (Yeah, it’s silly, I know, but that’s just how I get…)

So…. I am going to try to take a class. It’s not an actual paid-for, register-for, and get-credit for, but I’m picking one of MIT’s OpenCourseWare. Many of these classes have all of the lectures (sometimes slides, sometimes video or audio), assignments (and answers in many cases), exams, quizzes, etc. And they are all free. Again, you don’t get any credit for it, and it isn’t anything that can go on a resume. But if you are looking to get the grey cells moving, it looks like a really cool opportunity.

I’ve been looking at an intro to Physics class, and one of a couple of intro to Biology classes. I haven’t taken biology since 10th grade and I’ve never taken physics (although I did, many, many years ago, take a year of calculus in college, so I’m feeling brave…. Although that was almost 18 years ago…. Sheesh…. Okay, maybe I’m not feeling so brave!). I’m actually leaning toward one of the biology classes first, just because I’m interested in it. I have ordered the textbooks (given that the classes are a couple of years old, the books aren’t the newest editions, and only, in the case of the biology classes cost a couple of bucks a piece, plus shipping), and will start with whatever book shows up first.

Since there is no deadlines, I will have to drive myself a bit, but I’m actually sort of excited. I feel the need to learn something new, and since school isn’t in the cards right now, this looks like a cool alternative. We’ll see; I’ll keep you posted!
